How long is the call coded?

A segment of 20 minutes of both motivational interviewing and client-centered conversations is coded. However, conversations down to 10 minutes can be coded with maintained reliability in the coding. The person uploading the call can specify which segment of the conversation should be coded. If no segment is specified, the first 20 minutes of the conversation will be coded.

Coding according to MITI 4.2.1 (MITI 3.1)

The coding is done according to the Swedish translated manual Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Code 4.2.1 (MITI 4.2.1) and presented in a protocol where your conversation is assessed in MITI 4.2.1 variables. The protocol summarizes the MITI 4.2.1 variables in six measures of how well the conversation aligns with MI. Four of the six measures (MITI 3.1 variables in six measures) can be related to reference values for basic competence and skill in MI. The reference values are indicated in parentheses. Click here to see an example of a protocol.

Coding of client-centered conversation

In some situations and with certain clients, the advisor has no defined change goal (target behavior). Without a change goal in the conversation, only the parts of MITI that are general conversation skills related to clients' prognosis are used. Coding of client-centered conversation is presented in a protocol with reference values.

Quality assurance of operations

MIC Lab offers the service 'Quality assurance of operations'. Organizations (e.g., institutions, treatment centers, healthcare centers) can have their employees' MI practice quality assured over one or more years. During quality assurance, the organization receives a certificate, describing MI practice at the group level in measures of MI competence. Quality assurance enables the employees to receive supervision based on conversations that are coded. MIC Lab offers two different types of quality certificates: 'Scientific assessment of MI competence' and 'Monitoring of MI competence'. For more information about the different types of quality assurance, see here.

Coding of client statements according to CLEAR

The client's speech during a conversation about changing versus not changing can be coded. All types of conversations (not just MI) can be coded. The coding focuses on the client speech in a session that has been shown to predict change (or no change). The audio recording without a transcript of the conversation is coded according to the Swedish translation of the manual Client Language EAsy Rating (CLEAR) Coding System. The purpose of CLEAR is to categorize and quantify client speech that is either change talk (FT) or the opposite, sustain talk (BT).

Coding of client statements according to CLAMI

E.1 If the audio recording is supplemented with a transcript of the conversation, it is coded according to the Swedish translation of the manual Client Language Assessment in Motivational Interviewing (CLAMI). Ten or twenty minutes of the conversation is transcribed and the client's statements are coded in detail in the transcript. You create the transcript yourself and upload it on the website in connection with your coding order. Coding without coder comments (MITI 4.2.1, MITI 3.1, client-centered conversation, CLEAR) The assessments are presented in a protocol with only numerical values for various variables. This service is aimed at MI supervisors who work with coding-based supervision and are familiar with the protocols. Coding with written feedback (MITI 4.2.1, MITI 3.1, client-centered conversation, CLEAR) The assessments in the protocol are supplemented with written examples of statements in the conversation that the assessments are based on. Coding with oral feedback (MITI 4.2.1, MITI 3.1, client-centered conversation, CLEAR). The assessments in the protocol are supplemented by the person who coded the conversation providing telephone supervision on the coding for 30 minutes. When MIC Lab has received the conversation, a coder will contact you and schedule a time for telephone feedback. The coding protocol will be sent as preparation before the conversation. Oral feedback via telephone is performed only during the time period reserved in the booking. If the oral feedback is not utilized, a written feedback with the coder's comments will be provided instead. The booked date for feedback can be rescheduled once within the timeframe of the booking and no later than 24 hours before the scheduled time.

Coding with transcript

Coding of a conversation according to MITI 4.2.1 where the coding is done both by listening to the conversation and with a transcript of the conversation provides the most specific feedback. Transcripts can be made by MIC Lab, as a special order.
