How long is the call coded?

A 20-minute section of both motivational interviews and client-centered conversations is coded. However, calls as short as 10 minutes can be coded with reliability in the coding. The person uploading the call can indicate which section of the call should be coded. If no section is indicated, the first 20 minutes of the call will be coded.

Coding according to MITI 4.2.1 (MITI 3.1)

The coding is done according to the Swedish translated manual Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Code 4.2.1 (MITI 4.2.1) and is presented in a protocol where your conversation is rated in the MITI 4.2.1 variables. The protocol summarizes the MITI 4.2.1 variables in six measures of how well the conversation aligns with MI. Four of the six measures (MITI 3.1 variables in six measures) can be related to reference values for basic competence and skill in MI. The reference values are indicated in parentheses. Click here to see an example of a protocol.

Coding of client-centered conversation

In some situations and with certain clients, the counselor does not have a specific change goal (target behavior). In such cases, only parts of MITI that are related to general conversation skills and are relevant to client prognosis are used. Coding of client-centered conversations is presented in a protocol with reference values.

Quality assurance of practice

MIC Lab offers the service 'Quality assurance of practice'. Organizations (such as institutions, treatment centers, healthcare clinics) can have their employees' MI practice quality-assured for one or more years. During quality assurance, the organization receives a certificate that describes the MI practice at a group level in terms of the measures of MI competence. Quality assurance allows employees to receive supervision based on coded conversations.

MIC Lab offers two different types of quality certificates: 'Scientific assessment of MI competence' and 'Monitoring of MI competence'. For more information on the different types of quality assurance, see here.

Coding of client statements according to CLEAR

The client's speech during a conversation about change or staying the same can be coded. All types of conversations (not just MI) can be coded. The coding focuses on the client's speech in a session that has been shown to predict change (or no change).

Lack of transcript of the call is coded according to the Swedish translated manual Client Language Easy Rating (CLEAR) Coding System. The purpose of CLEAR is to categorize and quantify client speech as either change talk (CT) or sustain talk (ST).

Coding of client statements according to CLAMI

E.1 If the audio recording is accompanied by a transcript of the call, it is coded according to the Swedish translated manual Client Language Assessment in Motivational Interviewing (CLAMI). In the transcript, 10 or 20 minutes of the call are written out and the client's statements are coded in detail. You create the transcript yourself and upload it on the website when placing your coding order.

Coding without coder comments (MITI 4.2.1, MITI 3.1, client-centered conversation, CLEAR)
The ratings are presented in a protocol with only numerical values for different variables. This service is intended for MI supervisors who work with coding-based supervision and are familiar with the protocols.

Coding with written feedback (MITI 4.2.1, MITI 3.1, client-centered conversation, CLEAR)
The ratings in the protocol are supplemented with written examples of statements in the conversation on which the ratings are based.

Coding with verbal feedback (MITI 4.2.1, MITI 3.1, client-centered conversation, CLEAR).
The ratings in the protocol are supplemented by the coder providing 30 minutes of telephone consultation on the coding. After MIC Lab has received the call, a coder will contact you to schedule a time for phone feedback. The coding protocol will be sent as preparation before the call.

Verbal feedback via phone is only provided during the time period reserved in the booking. If verbal feedback is not used, written feedback with coder comments will be provided instead. The scheduled feedback date can be rescheduled once within the booking timeframe and at least 24 hours before the scheduled time.

Coding with transcript

Coding of a call according to MITI 4.2.1 where the coding is done both by listening to the call and with a transcript of the call provides the most specific feedback. Transcripts can be generated by MIC Lab as a special order.
