How long is the conversation coded?

A 20-minute section of both the motivational and client-centered conversations is coded. However, conversations as short as 10 minutes can be coded with maintained reliability in coding. The person uploading the conversation can specify which section of the conversation to code. If no section is specified, the first 20 minutes of the conversation are coded.

Coding according to MITI 4.2.1 (MITI 3.1)

The coding is done according to the Swedish translation of the manual Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Code 4.2.1 (MITI 4.2.1) and is presented in a protocol where your conversation is rated in the MITI 4.2.1 variables. The protocol summarizes the MITI 4.2.1 variables into six measures of how well the conversation conforms to MI. Four of the six measures (MITI 3.1 variables in six measures) can be related to reference values for basic competence and proficiency in MI. The reference values are indicated in parentheses. Click here to see an example of a protocol.

Coding of client-centered conversations

In some situations and with certain clients, the counselor does not have a specific change goal (target behavior). Without a change goal in the conversation, only the parts of MITI that are general conversation skills and that are related to clients' prognosis are used. Coding of client-centered conversations is presented in a protocol with reference values.

Quality assurance of services

MIC Lab offers the service 'Quality Assurance of Services'. Organizations (such as institutions, treatment centers, primary care centers) can have their staff's MI practice quality-assured for one or more years. In quality assurance, the organization receives a certificate that describes the group-level MI performance in terms of the measures of MI competence. Quality assurance enables staff to receive supervision based on coded conversations.

MIC Lab offers two different types of quality assurance certificates: 'Scientific assessment of MI competence' and 'Monitoring of MI competence'. For more information on the different types of quality assurance, see here.

Coding of client utterances according to CLEAR

The client's speech in a conversation about changing or not changing can be coded. All types of conversations (not just MI) can be coded. The coding focuses on client speech in a session that has been shown to predict change (or non-change).

Coding of client utterances according to CLAMI

E.1 If the recorded conversation is supplemented with a printout of the conversation, it is coded according to the Swedish translation of the manual Client Language Assessment in Motivational Interviewing (CLAMI). 10 or 20 minutes of the conversation are transcribed and the client's utterances are coded in detail in the transcript. You do the transcription yourself and upload it on the website in connection with your coding order.

Coding without coding comments (MITI 4.2.1, MITI 3.1, client-centered conversations, CLEAR)
The ratings are presented in a protocol with only numerical values for different variables. This service is aimed at MI supervisors who work with coding-based supervision and are familiar with the protocols.

Coding with written feedback (MITI 4.2.1, MITI 3.1, client-centered conversations, CLEAR)
The ratings in the protocol are supplemented with written examples of utterances in the conversation that the ratings are based on.

Coding with verbal feedback (MITI 4.2.1, MITI 3.1, client-centered conversations, CLEAR).
The ratings in the protocol are supplemented by the person who coded the conversation providing telephone consultation on the coding for 30 minutes. When MIC Lab has received the conversation, a coder will contact you to schedule a time for the phone feedback. The coding protocol is sent as preparation before the conversation.

Verbal feedback by telephone is only provided during the time period reserved in the booking. If verbal feedback is not used, a written feedback with comments from the coder will be provided instead. The booked date for feedback can be rescheduled once within the booking timeframe and no later than 24 hours before the scheduled time.

Coding with printout

Coding of a conversation according to MITI 4.2.1 where the coding is done by listening to the conversation and with a printout of the conversation provides the most specific feedback. Printouts can be made by MIC Lab as a special order.
